Lacey and Larking as a Dedicated Civil, Human, and Migrant Rights Advocates

Michael Lacey is an American mathematician born in the year 1959. Lacey is a dedicated advocate in the civil and human rights and an activist with a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition, he is also a journalist. His partner Jim Larkin, an activist and a dedicated advocate to human rights, is also a devoted journalist. Both Larkin and Lacey worked together in one of the local media station in their homeland.

In their efforts to air their views and advocate for the oppressed, immigrants, and those unable to speak for themselves regarding their rights, Sherriff Joe Arpaio, a local cop arrested them. Joe accused them of interfering with the immigration policies. However, after interrogation and a hearing from a judge, they were found not guilty. They were later released with a compensation amounting to $3.75 million dollars. The settlement led to the formation of the Frontera Fund, which they set up to advocate for human rights. The two journalists, who had spent their whole career in the defense for the human rights, decided the settlement would even benefit them better in their mission.

The Frontera fund was aimed at supporting for the civil, human, and migrant rights. The organization advocated for all human rights and also worked on eliminating the harsh rules set by the government regarding migrants and immigrants.

Understanding Advocacy of Human Rights

Due a rapid growing number of incidence reports that targeted migrants in the country, there has been a renewed energy in the human rights organizations. Countries are obliged to the rule that, no human being should be denied his/her humanly rights regardless of their origin. However, this rule is not respected my majority of the countries. Contrary to the law, refugees and other displaced individuals are denied their civil rights and are subjected to improper treatment. Their inability to fulfill their legal rights led to the formation of human rights advocating organizations such as the Frontera Fund formed by Lacey and Larkin.

In the past, human rights advocates have held the government guilty for failure to grant equal rights to migrants and immigrants. The government has on several occasions, been criticized of human rights violation. These led to the transformation of the legal systems in response to the critics. One such occasion happened in October 8, 2007 where two journalists, Lacey and Larkin were arrested for allegedly exposing information on the existence of grand jury proceedings.

The publishing of the story in the New Times and through their media platform led to the capture of the two journalists. However, Lacey and Larkin went ahead, sued the county, and later on prevailed in the case. Their success bagged them a good $3.75 million as settlement. The two journalists who had spent most of their life advocating for human rights later formed the now famous, Frontera Fund.
